When Natallia Tarrien, a 28-year-old pregnant woman from South Carolina, felt a tight feeling in her jaw, she turned to ChatGPT for some medical advice. The AI suggested she check her blood pressure, which read 142/109 and continued to rise. After another high reading, ChatGPT advised her to "Call an ambulance. Now," which she did right away.
Paramedics transported Tarrien to the hospital, where her blood pressure reached 200/146, and doctors diagnosed her with preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy-related blood pressure condition that can have long-term health consequences. They decided to induce labor right away and her baby was born safely, but two days later, the new mom suddenly lost her eyesight. She underwent an emergency MRI, which thankfully ruled out brain swelling, and her vision slowly returned over the next few days.
Tarrien recalls the doctor telling her she likely wouldn’t have survived the night if she had gone to sleep without seeking medical help. She shared her story on social media, where it went viral with over 24 million views. Now recovering, she and her newborn are healthy, and she expressed deep gratitude for ChatGPT’s unexpected role in saving their lives.
