On Monday, a good Samaritan in Waynesboro, Virginia, helped save a child walking alone on train tracks just minutes before a train arrived. Leonardo Santamaria was leaving work when he noticed the child on the tracks. Concerned for the child’s safety, he stepped out of his car and called out, but the child didn’t respond.
Seeing no adults nearby, Santamaria and another bystander followed the child to keep him safe. When Santamaria heard a train approaching, he quickly acted, pulling the child off the tracks and bringing him to safety. “A train was coming in the direction of the kid,” he says, “So I had to act fast.”
Soon after the incident, officers from the Waynesboro Police Department arrived and were followed by the child’s family. The case has been referred to Child Protective Services for review, which Santamaria supports, saying, “Just to make sure everything is okay… Hopefully, it doesn’t happen again.”
