After days of relentless rain in Clifton, Kentucky, which had floodwaters rising to dangerous levels, reaching rooftops and windows, local resident Kody Smith took action to rescue pets trapped in the flood. He works for Stokley’s Marine and got approval from his boss to use a boat and help rescue stranded animals.
Along with a friend, Smith navigated the flooded neighborhood by boat, rescuing cats and dogs left behind after the evacuation. He shares that some cats were crying out for help, and in one instance, he parked the boat on a roof and entered a flooded home through a window to find animals floating in a tote bin.
Having lived through floods himself, Smith says he doesn’t judge families who had to evacuate quickly without their pets. Instead, he’s focused on doing what they couldn’t, saying, “That is why we came down here.” Smith’s efforts have helped save multiple animals and brought relief to families who had to leave them behind.
