Last week, an elderly couple in California took matters into their own hands to save their home from the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles. As flames approached Susan and Winston Salser’s home, she used a garden hose to fight the fire on one side of the house, while he tackled the flames on the other. The couple, both in their mid-eighties, successfully fought off the flames, preserving their home, one of only three left standing on their street. They’d faced a similar situation in 1978 and once again managed to protect their property.
Their son, Mark Salser, who lives in Seattle, was deeply concerned for his parents' safety as he watched news coverage of the fire. Despite the danger, Susan and Winston refused to evacuate, relying on their resourcefulness and Winston's nearly 100 live oak trees, which helped shield their home from the flames.
Winston suffered burns to his arms and legs during the fire and is recovering in the hospital, while Susan has remained at their home despite not having water or power. Mark describes his parents as resilient and determined and credits their tenacity and problem-solving abilities with their survival and the preservation of their home.
